FOREWORD.
I am sending these Reprints to some of my business and private friends for their personal information. The letters are not intended for publication; this form of reproducing them was chosen merely for the sake of convenience.
Certain of the letters have been circulated in many countries with the deliberate intention of damaging the business of my Company, and, in the letter from New York (copies of which are also in the hands of more than one person), views have been attributed to me which even its writer should know I do not hold.
To counteract the mischief has therefore been the primary object of my letters. They may also help to convince misguided people whose views about England in regard to the war were formed on German official misrepresentation that they are quite wrong. If so, I shall have the satisfaction to feel that my endeavours are serving this good purpose.
